Open since 1964, The Shanty (officially the Shanty Cocktail Lounge) is one of the oldest bars in Cardiff and still holds down its original spot — original wooden bar and all. It's the quintessential beach dive: strong pours, a laid-back mix of locals and surfers, and zero pretense.
There's no kitchen, but check which food truck is parked out back — regulars time their visits around favorites like the pastrami and sushi vendors.
Inside you'll find a wraparound bar and plenty to do — pool tables, foosball, Golden Tee, darts, and a jukebox keep the good-times energy going. Out back, a dog-friendly patio with fire pits, heaters, and turf makes it a favorite post-beach hangout just north of San Elijo State Beach.
